Juan leads Hoffmann’s New York office, where he directs project teams in the diagnosis and resolution of building enclosure distress. With a project roster that includes icons of finance and industry such as the New York Stock Exchange, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, Prudential, American Express, and Verizon, Juan is also known for his work at educational institutions, notably Columbia University and Barnard College, as well as major New York area hospitals, churches, government facilities, and cultural touchstones such as Lincoln Center and Madison Square Garden. Recognized for his expertise in facade, roof, plaza, and waterproofing systems, he is often engaged as a building enclosure consultant not only for the rehabilitation of existing buildings, but also for new construction projects, where he provides guidance on design details, specifications, and construction administration. Juan’s projects have garnered industry accolades, including multiple Lucy G. Moses Preservation Awards from the New York Landmarks Conservancy.

As the office director, he oversees all work completed by the New York team to see that projects meet strict standards for technical accuracy, constructability, and performance. He provides mentorship and training to junior staff and management guidance to team leaders, all while modeling collaboration and leadership through his own extensive project roster. Juan is the firm’s senior expert on New York City’s Facade Inspection and Safety Program (FISP, also known as Local Law 11). A Qualified Exterior Wall Inspector (QEWI), he keeps tabs on updates to compliance requirements from the Department of Buildings, so his clients are always ahead of the curve. He has published articles on best practices for building enclosure design from windows to roofs, and he has shared his expertise on parapet safety to help guide owners in complying with evolving codes and new periodic inspection requirements.

Fluent in Spanish, Juan earned Bachelor of Architecture degrees from both Ricardo Palma University in Lima, Peru and Pratt Institute in New York. He was among the first invited to become a shareholder of Hoffmann, in 2011, and he has been with the firm since 1998.

Outside the office, Juan enjoys traveling to architectural landmarks around the world, as well as spending time with his wife, his two daughters, and his extended family.

Juan is a member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the Building Owners and Managers Association of New York (BOMA NY).
