Daniel L. Bishop, AIA
Vice President
Director, Architecture
Dan leads Hoffmann’s Washington DC area office, where he oversees a team of architecture and engineering professionals in the delivery of building enclosure projects. Recognized for his expertise in exterior envelope performance, he advises clients on thermal retrofits and upgrades that preserve building character while improving energy efficiency and indoor comfort. With experience restoring national monuments, federal facilities, and cultural institutions in and around the DC area, Dan is also well-versed in the appropriate treatment of sensitive, architecturally significant structures. He has lent his enclosure detailing expertise to the rehabilitation and preservation of diverse landmarks, including the Lehigh University Chapel, the Smithsonian Institution Building (“The Castle”), the United States Capitol Complex historic power plant, and the courtyard of the Freer Gallery of Art.
Beyond the diagnosis and resolution of building envelope distress, Dan also provides consultation to project teams for new construction projects, guiding the development of design details that prevent thermal bridging and leaks while improving resilience. As a manager, he seeks to create a collaborative environment that provides for professional growth and successful projects. Dan mentors junior staff members in the investigation of building enclosure conditions and offers guidance and direction in the development of sophisticated solutions to deterioration, improper construction, and wear. His leadership provides assurance that projects meet strict schedule and budget objectives while integrating design detailing customized to the building and situation. Often collaborating with other design firms, Dan offers specialized expertise in enclosure systems and historic restoration as part of project delivery teams.
Dan joined Hoffmann in 2011 and became one of the owners of the firm in 2022. He earned Bachelor of Science and Master of Architecture degrees from the State University New York at Buffalo, in addition to completing a graduate exchange program at the Aarhus School of Architecture in Denmark.
In his free time, Dan enjoys using his slowly growing home workshop to take on a variety of home improvement and woodworking projects.
Dan is a member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), Association for Preservation Technology (APT), Building Enclosure Council (BEC), and International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants (IIBEC).
