Thomas James T. Wyatt, Assoc. AIA, ΑΡΧ

Senior Project Representative

With past clients that include the U.S. Department of State and foreign governments, Thomas launched his career by completing restoration and adaptive reuse projects under some of the most stringent building codes in the world. Delivering historically sensitive preservation solutions that also provide high security, while adhering to strict project schedules and budgets, has been at the center of Thomas’ work since completing his education. A student of historic buildings, whether Federalist-era or Midcentury Modern, he aims to apply environmental design practices to improve building performance and extend the lifespan of these important structures.

Thomas earned a Bachelor of Design in Architecture degree summa cum laude from the University of Florida, then went on to receive a Master of Architecture degree from the University of Virginia with a certificate in Historic Preservation. As a Nix Travel Fellow, he traveled from Paris to Nîmes retracing Thomas Jefferson’s journey through France, then presented an installation visualizing this architectural narrative. Through his post-graduation experience coordinated secure design with multi-disciplinary project teams.

At Hoffmann, Thomas expands his government and institutional project portfolio as part of the firm’s Washington DC team. His experience bridging security and design informs his work on building enclosure projects, where considerations for safety and performance might range from secure yet accessible plaza design at a cultural institution to blast-resistant fenestration for a historic government facility. With Thomas’ training in preservation and design, he can meet these increasingly vital security needs while maintaining historic integrity.

Outside the office, Thomas’s hobbies are many and varied; they include photography and hand sketching of architectural landmarks, collecting and listening to vintage and recently released vinyl records, watching classic and modern cinema, cooking with cast iron, and working with his hands, especially through woodworking.

Thomas is active with Alpha Rho Chi (ΑΡΧ), the professional fraternity dedicated to architecture and allied professions. He is also a member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA).
