What’s it like to work at Hoffmann?

Our work is second to none because our people believe we’re the best at what we do. Being part of a team that does something few other firms do and even fewer do well is remarkably fulfilling.

Our offices don’t look like typical architects’ studios. That’s because they’re anything but typical. No fussy models or hastily pinned drawings cover the walls and floor, and no team of bleary-eyed interns slavishly trails a lead designer, feverishly jotting notes.

What will you find in our offices? Junior architects conferring with a company vice president about a tough remediation. A business development manager and a designer discussing a new proposal over video conference, across two different states. An engineer and a bookkeeper chatting about their kids.

We don’t demand late-night charrettes to make deadlines. Here, you’ll keep regular hours and be home in time to have dinner with your family, catch the game, or meet up with friends. We have flexible work options that blend work from home, in the field, and in the office, to meet the diverse needs and preferences of our team members.

Who says there’s no such thing as a free lunch?

At regular “Lunch-N-Learns,” you’ll have a bite while earning AIA continuing education credits at in-office or virtual seminars. Catch up on news and developments in the field by attending conferences, contributing to the Hoffmann JOURNAL, joining a Hoffmann University training, or just reading postings to the company intranet and blog. And every Friday, break early and join coworkers for Happy Hour, whether in-person or online. For the past two years, employees have also taken advantage of Summer Fridays, ending the workday early at the end of each week to get a jump start on the weekend.

For a firm with offices in three cities, we’re a tight group. Community volunteer days, golf outings, competition for the highly coveted office Bowling Trophy, volleyball and dodgeball and even bocce leagues, summer family picnics, and winter office parties are some of the many chances to get to know the people who work with you, whether in another state or at the next desk.

Emerging Professionals Group

A community of young professionals in architecture and engineering, the Emerging Professionals Group fosters collaboration among Hoffmann’s offices and provides professional development resources. Through Hoffmann University, a series of lunch-and-learn conversations with established design professionals in the firm, the group provides opportunities for learning, growth, and discussion on technical topics.

For those seeking licensure, the study sessions and support of the Emerging Professionals Group – in addition to company-paid educational resources and exams – encourages participants to meet their goals.

Hoffmann Architects + Engineers was recognized by the New England AIA Components in 2022 and 2023 as an Emerging Professional Friendly Firm for promoting the professional development and personal growth of emerging professionals.

Technical Training Committee

To foster ongoing professional development and mentoring, the Technical Training Committee hosts a series of lunchtime seminars (added bonus: attendees’ lunch is comped) presented by senior architects and engineers at the firm. With topics ranging from “Roofing 101” and “Historic Preservation and Landmarks” to the popular “Project Showcase” series, the interactive presentations, hosted online, launched during the pandemic as a way to connect remote team members and provide learning opportunities for employees at all experience levels. These popular seminars are attended not only by technical staff, but also by members of the administration, finance, business development, and marketing departments.

The Technical Training Committee also curates the Hoffmann University resource library on the company intranet, with videos of past presentations and discussions, as well as articles and issues of the Hoffmann JOURNAL related to each topic. Participation on the committee is open to all employees.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

At Hoffmann, we appreciate the importance of creating an environment in which all employees feel valued, heard, and empowered.

We recognize that the diversity of our employees’ experiences, perspectives, backgrounds, and beliefs enhances our firm’s ability to identify and meet our clients’ needs, collaborate with other professionals, and provide architectural and engineering services of the highest caliber.

Our Diversity & Inclusion Committee is composed of a cross-section of our workplace, from the president of the firm to junior technical staff. If you’d like, you can join as soon as your first day.

Incorporating diverse viewpoints across social, cultural, racial, ethnic, gender, and sexual identities is critical to building relationships with our diverse clients and colleagues. Inclusivity and equity encourage new voices and ideas to thrive, allowing our firm to innovate, evolve, and provide leadership that not only responds to the industry, but drives it forward.

The ambitious initiatives of the Diversity & Inclusion Committee were recognized with the inaugural J.E.D.I. Award from AIA Connecticut. Learn more about our work to expand diverse representation in the firm and the profession in our Diversity Statement.
