About the presenter

Tai Mahumuti, PE, Senior Engineer with Hoffmann Architects + Engineers in New York, is a team leader and one of the owners of the firm. Certified as a NYC inspector for both exterior walls and parking structures, he is well-versed in the nuances of the City's local laws for building enclosures.

About the moderator

Craig Hargrove, AIA, Senior Vice President and Director, Architecture with Hoffmann, leads the firm's New York office. As a member of the Board of Directors, he brings vision and experience to shaping the company. He has been guiding NYC owners in meeting inspection requirements for more than 20 years.

What to expect

Once you register, you'll receive a confirmation email with a calendar invitation and a link to join the webinar. During the program, you'll have the opportunity to interact with the presenter in the Q+A chat. The presentation will be followed by a brief question and answer session. 

The information you enter in the registration form will allow us to record your participation on your AIA transcript, if applicable. You will receive a certificate of completion following the program, which you should retain as documentation of your participation toward PE PDH or RA continuing education requirements.

Facades

In 1980, after a student was killed by falling masonry, New York City enacted Local Law 10, mandating periodic facade inspection for buildings over six stories. Facade Inspection Safety Program (FISP) Cycle 9, enacted in 2020, included significant changes to further protect public safety.

Parking structures

In 2021, New York City enacted Local Law 126, requiring that all garages undergo Periodic Inspection of Parking Structures (PIPS) every 6 years. The webinar includes the history of garages, types of construction, PIPS inspection, and report requirements, common issues, and typical repairs.

Parapets

Beginning January 1, 2024, New York City building owners must undertake a yearly inspection of parapet walls, then remedy any hazardous conditions. The mandate was added at the same time that the PIPS garage requirements were enacted.
